After puberty, the number of fat cells does not increase, but their volume does — and this results in weight gain. Eating habits and lifestyle are the most important factors in weight gain and loss.

A proper diet, exercise, and a regular lifestyle are essential for losing excess weight. However, even people who meet these conditions can be left with stubborn fat deposits that simply will not go away. Certain areas of the body — the abdomen, waist, hips, the inner and outer thighs, and the knees — are regions where fat deposits resist diet and exercise. Excess fat in these areas can be reduced to some extent through diet and exercise, but pushing diet and exercise further tends to disrupt the body’s overall metabolism rather than slimming these specific areas.

What is liposuction (fat removal)?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure in which fat deposits in certain areas of the body are removed using a special vacuum or special injectors. It is definitely not a weight-loss surgery — it is a body contouring surgery. With this procedure, fat tissue that has increased in volume and resists diet and exercise is removed from the body, while the number of existing fat cells is also reduced.

In liposuction surgery, the area with stubborn fat is first swollen with a special fluid injection. A few incisions, only a few millimeters long, are then made on or near this area. Through these incisions, metal tubes called cannulas — 2-6 mm in diameter depending on the patient’s condition — are inserted beneath the skin, and the cannulas are connected to a vacuum device via transparent tubing.

The vacuum device is switched on, and the cannulas are moved at the appropriate depth within the fat deposit areas to begin removing the excess fat. The fat suction process continues via the vacuum until the desired body contour and a smooth skin surface are achieved. In recent years, ultrasound energy has also come into use. In this method, excess fat tissue is broken down with ultrasound waves and then removed with the vacuum in a similar way.

While liposuction removes stubborn fat from the deeper layers, the technique developed over the last 10 years known as superficial liposuction or liposculpture can also correct fat deposits that cause contour irregularities. The liposculpture technique has also become a method that delivers definitive results in correcting skin laxity and eliminating stubborn cellulite.

When classic liposuction first emerged in the 1970s, the cannulas used were quite wide and sharp, and the vacuum devices available were inadequate, which caused serious problems. The procedure could cause significant fluid and electrolyte loss in the body. With the techniques used over the last 10 years, liposuction has secured its indispensable place in body contour correction. As long as the goal is contour correction rather than weight loss, and the procedure is performed on a well-selected patient, under hospital conditions, with proper technique, and within the safety limit, it carries no particular risk. Today the safety limit is generally accepted in various sources as 2.5-4.5 liters. Some patients do have more fat removed than this. In such cases, measures are taken to restore the patient’s fluid and electrolyte balance, and a blood transfusion may sometimes be necessary.

Areas Treated with Liposuction

Known as the fat-removal operation, liposuction helps remove excess fat from the patient’s body and gives the treated area a more aesthetic appearance. By removing the fat layer that has accumulated between the muscle and the skin, fat-removal operations help the body take shape, allowing the fat beneath the skin to be removed quickly so you can achieve a well-toned body.
Generally applied to the abdomen, hips, and waist, this aesthetic procedure is also performed on the hips, thighs, inner knees, and the area beneath the bra line. By removing fat from the inner and outer parts of the upper arms and reshaping the back and abdomen, this procedure helps you achieve a healthy, well-toned body.

Who Can Have Liposuction Treatment?

Liposuction is regarded as an aesthetic procedure, yet it is not classified among breast, facial, or body aesthetic operations. This procedure, which is based entirely on fat removal, is performed on patients who have gained excessive weight and, despite subsequently losing weight, still have widespread fat remaining in their body. It is not intended to address skin sagging or stretch marks — it is entirely a procedure for suctioning out fat that has accumulated between the muscle and the skin. For this reason, patients should be aware that they will not see a dramatic change in their skin and body areas immediately after the initial treatment.

The number of fat cells in the adult human body is constant.
